Hello,

Do you know Athene ?
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=athene%20window%20manager&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCcQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Ffreecode.com%2Fprojects%2Fathene&ei=QkF3T7PzGMKM0AXWlICLDQ&usg=AFQjCNH1yR9h_5nQZR5ao8nb73b1Jw7ZKg

It's not necessary to compile, there is an installation script. You have three desktops to choose from and you can develop easily native applications for Athene by using DML, an integrated script. It's beautiful and very fun. Smile

It works in Vesa or under Xorg.

I followed it many years ago when it was still being developed. It was very interesting, but unfortunately closed source, and so it isn't a surprise that it was abandoned.

Do you have it working on Syllable Server?

Yes, I tested Athene on Server 0.4 in Vesa mode and it works very well.

It's possible to use applications "GTK1/2", "QT3/4" and SDL (compiled with libX11).

Yesterday, I compiled libX11 (without XORG) with all dependencies and GTK1 (with glib1.2). I have on CD, an old version of Gimp which works with GTK1. I tried in Athene and it works very well.

There is certainly a mini Xserver which can launch X11 applications.

I haven't modified the installation script. Athene installs all files in "/usr/local/". After just type "sudo athene".

If you have display problems, just edit the file "/usr/local/pandora/system/config/hardware/monitor.cfg" to disable automatic detection of the monitor. In Athene, there is a complete control panel.

That's amazing. Another example that the best things in computing fall by the wayside.

Yes, it's great. But Athene is not just a desktop environment. It is also a development tool. All desktops and embedded software are DML scripts with XML syntaxe. By using this script, you can create your own native software for Athene and it's very easy to do.

Here are some sample scripts (in XML style):

I put some points before "<" because the forum doesn't allow space in the beginning of lines "one dot = one space".

code:

<dml type="program">
..<window>
..</window>
</dml>

Then, double click on the DML file you created and you should see a blank window.

The parameter "opacity" modifies "transparency/opacity".

code:

<dml type="program">
..<window opacity="50%">
..</window>
</dml>

Here's an opaque window to 50%.

Then,you can add menus, icons, and buttons, change fonts, colors, change the settings of windows, etc. ... You can also use internal commands or call external software. You can use multiple scripts in a same software to write easily your software, etc. ...

I don't know the XML script and I learned the basics of DML just in one day. Smile

They were going in the right direction, but REBOL could always do that better. I'm working towards enabling that in Syllable using the Red language.

Wow!

The announcement is from a year ago, though. First they wanted to release early 2014, then July, but apparently it didn't happen. And most pages say it would only be for Android, although others also mention Windows.
