Hello,
i'm new to Syllable OS but i like the idea behind it and i would like to port some SDL games/emulators.
So i have installed the DevelopersDelight, Perlspit and shells packages but none of them have binaries for libSDL.
Do i have to compile it myself ?
If so, how should i do it ? (the usual configure make install ?)

I can see the last build of Syllable is quite dated.
You said that you don't plan on releasing a new stable build anytime soon but do you
have any plan to provide, let's say, a development build ?
Haiku OS does that.

The Website has not been updated since 2012 and on DistroWatch, it is even listed as Discontinued !
You should do a small update, even if you did not worked on it, saying that you're not dead and that syllable is progressing slowly or something like that.

Just my two cents

Thanks

Hello and welcome.

SDL is included in the base system, so libSDL is already installed.

Have you seen the third-party Syllable Software site, where many SDL programs are already ported?

The status for development builds is the same as for releases: currently no time plan. Meanwhile, development has been happening here on the forum and on third-party sites such as the above. This forum is an official channel, so everyone should take it into account when looking for the latest activity.

The status on DistroWatch relates to Syllable Server. For some reason they don't want to take Syllable Desktop releases into account.

Yes, i did look at some of their ports and they all link to this directory :
/resources/indexes/include/SDL

However, going to that directory reveals that only SDL_image.h is installed there.
I guess i should take the sdl headers from my linux distro and put it there,
am i right ?

Thanks for your answers, i guess i will try to port PokeMini.

Don't do that: you need the Syllable headers, for the right versions of libraries used on your Syllable version.

Did you install the development files pack?

Yes, i installed all the three packs :
Developer's Delight , The Perl Pit and Shell Essentials.
I even tried to reinstall Developer's Delight pack again but it did not made a difference.
GCC is installed, SDL-image too but SDL was not.

The development files pack is a different pack, containing the headers for what is in the base system. Since it has to match the base system, it is presented on the main download page where you downloaded Syllable, in the subsequent steps you should take if you want to develop.

There is also the Network Necessities pack. I don't remember, but you may need it for some development.

Well, this is a bit confusing...
It looks like it may require the Network pack because it seems it may be trying to download from CVS...
Would it be possible to have a syllable os qemu-image for development with libsdl and all that crap installed without going through confusing installations ?

There is: it's the developer's edition. You can find it here in the Community section. It's not a VM image, but an extended installation disc.

If you want to use CVS and Builder, you indeed need the Network Necessities pack.
