I wanted to download sIDE from cvs using rsync.
I used the command:
rsync -av rsync://syllable.cvs.sourceforge.net/cvsroot/syllable
/syllable/system/apps/develop/sIDE/ /boot/home/root/cvs/sIDE/

it was correctly downloaded, but all files were renamed. Every file had an additional ",v"
For exampel instead of "main.cpp" it was "main.cpp,v"

I don't know rync so well, so I'm not sure, if I didn't use rsync correctly, or if it is a bug.

I didn't even know that SourceForge supports RSync, but this means that you are getting the CVS database, not a checkout. You will get a local copy of the repository database from which you will have to make CVS do a local checkout.

It's probably not worth rsyncing a cvs repository except in special circumstances - because you get more than you need and in this case you have to checkout anyway.

Of course it might be useful to rsync your own checkout around - i've done that between machines if i need my copy of the repository to be synced with my laptop.

In general just checkout as per the instructions for the respoitory.

Unless there's a way to rsync a checkout of the repository direct... maybe you can pass the result of cvs to rsync, i don't know why that would be useful at all. I'm guessing sourceforge support for rsync is not for this purpose but for getting files that aren't in a repository.

cvs -d:[email protected]:/cvsroot co syllable

cvs supports compression just like rsync with -z.
