I've just tested various video files in 0.6.6 and I have no sound. The desktop log includes

OSS: unable to open /dev/sound
OSS: audio failed to initialise

Strangely (to me, at least), this was reported before it checked out the audio hardware and found it OK:

AC97 SiS7012 pcmin initialised
AC97 SiS7012 pcm initialised

Have you read the instructions in the Welcome document and configured your sound output?

Syllable has two audio systems: an OSS-like system, which creates devices under /dev/audio, and a newer system which creates device nodes under /dev/sound.

For you as a user the difference is immaterial, because the media server takes care of the differences for you. However that is why you see the message "unable to open /dev/sound": your audio-card has an older style driver which creates a node under /dev/audio, and the message is created when the media server is checking for available audio devices under both /dev/sound & /dev/audio.

My mistabke, as usual! A bit of experimenting revealed the correct settings.

I thought to move this out of the Bugs section, but I'll leave it here as a feature request. The audio output selection should have an automatic default.
