After an uneventful (non-problematic) installation of Syllable Desktop from a basic cd burn, the machine does not boot. There's just a blinking cursor and nothing else for at least an hour and a half afterward. The computer is a Dell Dimension 9150 with an Intel Pentium D 3 ghz cpu, 2 gigs of ram and a 12 gb AFS-formatted partition on its first and only SATA drive. BTW, there were four attempts to install from three different burns on two different types of media from two different burners, so I'm certain it isn't the discs. The boot manager was installed twice automatically by the software and twice by two separate people who definitely know what they're doing. Thanks.

Is that just a blinking cursor before or after GrUB starts? If it is before the boot loader even starts, then GrUB is definitely not working right, which may be an incorrect installation or an incompatibility with your system.

If it is after the boot loader has done something, then it may be an incompatibility with Syllable itself. Is there any message on the screen at all before the blinking cursor?

After the bootloader is finished doing its job. Then a blank screen and some hard drive activity for a few seconds, then the blinking cursor and nothing else. The bootloader works as it should, but the OS itself doesn't seem to want to boot.

What are the last messages that you see?

It is odd that the installation CD would work while the installed system doesn't. Have you tried the alternative startup options for troubleshooting from the boot menu?

Your machine has a SATA hard disk. This often has the anomaly of shifting the drive numbers up, by two or a multiple of two. This is the most likely cause of your problem. It requires adjusting the drive letters and numbers in the /boot/grub/menu.lst file and requires some experimentation to see what the shift is. You can do this during the installation by editing the menu.lst file, or you can do it on the existing installation by mounting it from the install or live CD, but that is trickier.

If you want an easier method, you could download our latest development build, which should have an extra installation option that performs a shift by two. This may not work, though, and the current development build is not complete: most seriously, the web browser doesn't function.
