I am pretty well useless, but have for the last few months been looking for a good candidate for setting up a home server with a web interface. My needs are simple enough, a place to store, mails, music and video, other bits and pieces.

It gets a little more complex, not much, but I want interfaces simple enough for my wife to have a cd copied and correctly placed and a HTML system for file references; so that instead of just names I have useful descriptions and search patterns of the file in question.

That is me, and it will take time to achieve and the result will work, but will be untidy. Cheyenne and Rebol is major influence.

So without anything else to contribute, may I suggest that I might not be the only person thinking in this way.

Regardless of what anyone might thing about Google Chrome OS and its web based Native Client and cloud approach, there is something to be said for linking relatively weak domestic devices to a domestic web server that might be doing a lot more than just storing data.

Give the server a GUI interface for the less than code gifted, look at Google's Native Client idea and see if that could work with the server, and I have some other suggestions to make about eliminating filenames and using data and context rich referencing, and a single file container format.

Hello, Greg. I think you're right that many people could use something like this, and we have been thinking in this direction for many years. That's why we produced an extra server next to our main Syllable Desktop project, and that's why I've been integrating REBOL and Cheyenne into it.

The thing is, and I think you can relate to that, we're still in the phase of assembling our fundamental building blocks. So although we definitely want to do the sorts of things you say, we haven't gotten to that yet, but we are building the base platforms to enable it.

So if you are looking for the functionality you mention in the short term, I would suggest using one of the specialised Linux distributions that aim to do similar things. On the other hand, if you are prepared to build some of the functionality and the interface yourself, and you would like to do much of it in REBOL and Cheyenne, Syllable Server is meant to be a base for that. In that case, contact me in the REBOL AltME space, because I have a new version of Server almost ready, with a much newer version of Cheyenne, for example.

Kaj this sounds great, Cheyenne is wonderful, the only time I even started to get a handle on using a web server it was playing around with it. It is because of Cheyenne/Rebol that I came back to look at the Syllable server.

I may be a bit strange but some of the media interfaces, which do so much and in many respects too complex for my wife to use, she loves her music and at least with a HTML front end I can have some hope of getting it almost as simple as putting in a CD. I will simply be using a PSP, or similar handheld to interface with the server, what happens then in terms of streaming I will have to work out.

I thought to start out with the Syllable server partly because of the community and also with the idea that it would not be an overly cluttered linux which I have in the past found difficult to get on top of.

One solution was to run multiple sound cards so that a few different rooms could be catered for via coax or optical. Most of the rest, I think, could almost be entirely done in Rebol (hopefully R3). Another is to simply stream to the handheld and use its stereo out (which would suit her, but rankles me.

Cheyenne/Rebol is to me the greatest asset, I believe that 90% of functionality for most things are quite simple -- the other 10% is a completely different matter, hopefully I can pick up bits and pieces to do them.

HTML5 looks like a good way to smooth things over, exciting times just around the corner is the way I am looking at the technology brew at the moment.

Thanks Kaj for your generous reply, a bit further down the track I will join altme.

Greg
