If everything needed is available, Syllable connects to the network/Internet automatically. Your network chip needs to be supported and there needs to be a DHCP server on your network for automatic configuration.

Are you using a wired network?

Do you mean the traditional Unix man pages? They're installed, but the man reader isn't. Syllable prefers the HTML versions and shows those in the browser. However, the HTML versions are generated during package installation, not on system installation, so they're missing from the live CD.

yes, i use a wired network.

the "manual pages" shows at the "Welcome.html". since they're missing from the live CD, i was wondering maybe i can find them at internet.

ps: the network chip is Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller

The network chip is probably not supported, but when you go into Network Preferences, is it listed?

The man pages are the standard ones for the ported software Syllable includes, so they're easy to find on the Internet if you search for them.

It's a pity that the network chip is not supported.

I can not go into Network Preferences, when I connect the cable before booting.

I just want to read the man pages to set the network, not for other software.

Thank you, Kaj, for solving my little problem. It seems that Syllable still not ready for acer aspire one.

How do you mean, you can not go into Network Preferences?

There are no man pages about Syllable. They're exclusively for ported software. The Syllable documentation is listed in the Welcome document.

You can see here that wired networking works at least on the original Acer Aspire One with Syllable 0.6.6:

http://forum.syllable.org/viewtopic.php?t=1474

The Atheros you mention is the wireless network chip, so that one won't work. The one you need to look for is the RealTek.

If I boot Syllable without plugging the network cable, I can go into Preferences and go into Network Preferences, and I can see 4 subset---Interfaces, General, DNS, and Hosts.

If I boot Syllable with plugging the network cable, I can go into Preferences, but when I click the "Network", it shows nothing. Besides, If I click "Web Browser", it shows nothing, too.

Oh! it works since 2009.8.29, that's good news for me.

But when I read information about network cart, it shows :
(1)Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller
(2)Broadcom 802.11g

I think "Broadcom 802.11g" is the wireless network chip, am I wrong?

Yes, this seems to be a different Acer Aspire One. It's not the original model, is it? I know for example the newer Pro version doesn't work as well with Syllable.

I'll move this to the Bugs section for the disappearing Network Preferences. It may be hanging during network (chip) detection.

I don't know if it is the original model, I just know it was made at 2009.

Though it hang during network (chip) detection, but other software works fine.

IT's a little weird, I have just tried it 3 times, and I can go into Network Preferences (It shows as like not plugging the network cable).

But the Web Browser does not work 1 in 3 times.I feel that the Web Browser runs slowly at first time when booting succefully from the live CD, mabye I should not click other software before it runs ok.

I will try it more times.

Webster is the largest program we have, because it uses huge, ported libraries. Running from a CD is slow, so yes, starting Webster the first time will take several seconds.

You do use the Acer Aspire One option from the boot menu, don't you?

No, it does not show the Acer Aspire One option, so I use the first option from the boot menu.
