The lower layers of Syllable are written in C and have POSIX interfaces on top of them, so they resemble Linux programming a lot.

The higher layers, particularly the GUI and media server, are written in C++ and resemble the BeOS interfaces a lot.

Quite a few languages have been ported, so you can program the C layers in any language that can interface to C. For example, the build system is currently written in Ruby, using standard interfaces.

The C++ layers are much harder to interface, so in practice, you can only write native graphical programs in C++. SDL is included in the base system, so as an alternative, you can write some graphical programs in other languages by using SDL.

This is not as elegant and unified as we would like, so we are trying to standardise on using the REBOL family of languages, particularly REBOL 3 and Red. For example, the package manager is currently written in ORCA, an older REBOL-like language, also using standard interfaces.
