Trying to install 0.6.5 natively takes over three hours on this machine. It's a dual core xeon 3.2 ghz, with 2 gigs of RAM. The video card is an ATI radeon x850 (though this happens with nvidia video cards, too, so it appear to be unrelated to the video card/drivers). I do not believe this to be a problem with the atapi driver or the cdrom drive since, even though I can't boot up 0.6.5 on this machine due to a problem with acpi_cpu, 0.6.4 had the same poor performance even after installation (ie. it could take up to a minute or more simply to pop up the file system browser and display the Applications folder when clicking on the Desktop icon).

Here's the debug log from the installation. In this case, I stopped the installation after maybe 15 minutes:

Does enable_ata_dma=false and/or ata_pci_force_generic=true make any difference?

It did not make a difference in 0.6.4. I have not checked 0.6.5 and won't be able to for a few days.

No problem. I couldn't remember if we tried force_generic with 0.6.4

We definitely tried enable_ata_dma=false and I'm pretty sure we tried ata_pci_force_generic=true. I'll give them both a shot with the 0.6.5 CD in a bit.

Adam

EDIT: Just tried both options on the 0.6.5 install CD and they did not improve the performance at all.

Morning all Smile

Are there ISO images available for snapshots of the current work being done? I'm just curious if anything might have changed since 0.6.5 to resolve, or at least improve, this situation?

Nevermind, I found a link to the development 0.6.6 CD image.

And, FYI, it's just as slow under 0.6.6 as it was under 0.6.4 and 0.6.5.

I started the installation, ran to the store for two hours, came back, and it was still installing. I rebooted, started an install via qemu, and completed it in about 15 minutes Smile

Same problem with March 3rd developer version. Installing to the same physical drive from the same physical CDROM drive via qemu takes minutes, vs. the hours it takes to install it natively. Here's the serial debug information from the (canceled) installation:

You certainly have bad luck with your machine. In any case, thanks for keeping trying this.

I trust you tried the usual boot kernel options, that are now available from the boot menu? Are the results the same with disabling ATA DMA, ACPI and PCI IRQ routing, for example? You clearly have problems with the ATA driver, and the IRQ routing detection by ACPI also looks suspicious.

Hello Adam,

I first had to wait many hours for the installation to finish on VirtualBox when using the "normal" installation. When I switched over to the VirtualBox installation option it finished within minutes. Turns out there was some magic in that option (I suspect disable_smp=true). Seems counter-intuitive, as you have a multi-CPU, but might be worth a try installing with the VirtualBox option?

Cheers,
Stephen

If I remember correctly we tried disable_smp=true before, which helped didn't it?

I believe this particular issue is because of the poor APIC configuration in Syllable, which means that your machine has CPU's numbered as #0 & #2, which I strongly suspect causes of issues with things like scheduling and IPC.

Currently Syllable does not attempt to program the virtual APIC ID and does not virtual/physical mapping: the physical APIC ID is used throughout. It should in theory be a fairly simple patch to add this additional code to do this (The APIC code is pretty small) but testing & debugging it is what takes the time as you have to reboot all the time! If anyone really wants to have a go at fixing this though they'd be more than welcome.

Yes, we tried disable_smp and disable_acpi (both separately and together) Smile

Just wanted to confirm that this is still an issue in 0.6.6, though I doubt anyone was expecting an improvement.

I may put some work into fixing the APIC initialisation stuff soon.
